In the state of Pennsylvania, changing one’s name is a relatively simple process. This blog attempts to outline some of the steps that may be needed to get through the process of changing one’s name after a divorce.

It is important to note that in a divorce, the court does not view name changes as official name changes, but instead as reverting back to your original name. because of this, the process is much simpler than a normal name change.

In Centre county, a divorcee may go to the pronothary’s office and fill out a brief form and pay a fee. The court will then issue five certified copies of this form that can be used for legal purposes. This includes changing your name with the DMV, and work, and on legal documents.

This process may vary slightly by county, so it is important to check with the county you filed for divorce in. This entire process will happen in the county where the divorce took place.

Copies of this form are available with your attorney. If you have any questions about name changes, contact Tim Fleming at wtfleming@fleminglaw.info.
